At EHF, we believe in the saying “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.” EHF seizes on heart health awareness days and other selected days to promote Heart Health of the public by organizing activities such as walks, community cardiovascular disease risk factor screening, and fitness sessions.

Screening ideally not only detects major cardiovascular disease risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, but it is also a platform for education and therapy. Hypertension for instance is a silent killer which can only be detected by going for a blood pressure check. A vast majority of Nigerians found that they were hypertensive only when they go to the hospital for an unrelated health problem. Screening aids early diagnosis and treatment of major risk factors such as hypertension thus forestalling fatal complications such as heart attack, heart failure, kidney damage, stroke, etc. Treating the complications of hypertension entails costly interventions such as cardiac bypass surgery, carotid artery surgery and dialysis, draining individual and government budgets.

Government at levels should as a matter of urgency establish screening centres across the length and breadth of Nigeria. This will aid early diagnosis and treatment and will go a long way in reducing the number of Nigerians coming down with fatal complications such as heart attack and stroke. It will also lessen the burden of cardiovascular disease of the economy as the number of Nigerians plunged into catastrophic spending as a result of cardiovascular disease will be greatly reduced. EHF flagged off its community cardiovascular disease risk factors screening on Tuesday, September 29, (World Heart Day) 2015.
